Boomers and the dependency ratio

From the Census Bureau.

Cause for concern?

  1. Now I might be missing something big but... The dependency ratio by my understanding shows what percent of older people (retired) will be supported by younger people (workers). Well, what if we don't need to support the older population? The asset value of the baby boomers is estimated to be over 13 trillion US dollars. I think the baby boomers will do a pretty good job of taking care of themselves, that is not to say they won't need help. The US will of course increase healthcare, and one would think that the private healthcare sector will grow like crazy when the baby boomers get to be older than 75 or 80 and need intensive care. I don't know that the dependency ratio is something to panic about, but being aware of it won't hurt either. If we were talking about a poorer nation then yes, we would probably be in trouble.
